The study on "Effect of oral gabapentin on postoperative epidural analgesia" by A. Turan et al is very interesting.Oral gabapentin is being used for chronic backache, paraesthesia in the ICU setting and postoperative pain. In few patients, we have used this drug, instead of carbamazepine, in our intensive care unit to treat pain in guillian barre syndrome. The relief in pain was not sufficient in these patients and combination of both oral gabapentin and carbamezepine was also tried but the relief was minimal. The effect of oral gabapentin in postoperative analgesia in spinal surgery has also been studied and published with contradictory results. The addition of any nonsteroidal antiinflammatory analgesics with proven safety would provide the same or better analgesia. The complete profile of side effects and adverse reactions of this drug is not known. Further studies in a larger group would be required to prove the efficacy of oral gabapentin Conflict of Interest:None declared |
