I read with great interest the editorial on supplementary maternal oxygen for emergency C-sections. Majority of the elective C-sections in the UK are done under regional anaesthesia[Spinal/CSE]and sometimes we do see higher block level beyond T4; indeed many patinets have increased BMI. Additional oxygen would have the same benefit in these situations as in emergency sections as the procedures are being carried out with the patient supine and the diaphragm additionally splinted with the enlarged uterus.In addition, as pointed out in the article it would be better if the patient has some supplementary oxygen in the event of conversion to GA or even when giving opioids to help in analgesia. So,additional oxygen may be of the same benefit in elective setting as in emergency setting.
