Paracervical block was performed in twelve labouring women and combined with continuous monitoring of the foetal heart, measurement of foetal pH changes, and measurement of foetal and maternal local anaesthetic levels. In six cases foetal heart rate abnormalities were noted after the block. Foetal acidosis occurred in these cases. There was no increased level of foetal local anaesthetic in cases with foetal heart changes when compared with cases without such changes.
