In reply to the question What is pharmacology?, Sir John Gaddum (1900–65) famously replied Pharmacology is what pharmacologists do.1 In many respects, it might also be considered that pharmacology is what anaesthetists do. Indeed, articles whose focus is basic or clinical pharmacology make up 60–80% of the original scientific articles of each issue of the British Journal of Anaesthesia. With the
