EFFECTS OF PROLONGED NITROUS OXIDE ON WOUND HEALING

GEOFFREY D. PARBROOK

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and University of Aberdeen Scotland

The effect of long-term nitrous oxide treatment on wound healing was assessed in rats using wound tensiometry, to assess wound strength in surgical incised wounds, and estimation of the rate of healing of a small area of full thickness skin loss. No effect on wound strength could be detected in animals treated for three days with 25 or 60 per cent nitrous oxide. Similarly, no significant difference was present in the rate of healing of the area of full thickness skin loss after two days treatment with nitrous oxide.
